Accessing Your Own Guidance

by Sheryl Karas M.A.

The people who work with me are often extremely impressed with my ability to hear spiritual guidance directly so the one question I get asked most is "how do I access my own guidance?"

My first question in return always is

Why do you want to do this?

If the answer is that you feel like you need to be able to predict the future or know what someone else is thinking or to be able to control what happens using psychic input, I don't recommend it!

Being able to separate fear and hope-based fantasy from true guidance is Rule #1 when it comes to this line of work. When fears or desire for power are a person's primary motivations in asking for guidance, the ability to use discrimination about the information one receives tends to fly out the window. This is true for the advice we receive in all our relationships but, since we tend to put more credence in what comes from spiritual realms, it is doubly easy to be deceived. Furthermore, guidance often comes in the form of metaphor and symbols. If the lens we are using to interpret our world is distorted, perfectly accurate symbolism can be easily misperceived.

However, if you want these skills to develop self-awareness, to work co-creatively with spirit, or to have access to a broader more enlightening perspective, that's another story. Eventually, I may write more about this but in the meantime here are a few tips to get you started on your way.
